Abstract

This study analyses the iconographic features of the wall paintings in the Orthodox church of St. Michael in Vithkuq, in southeastern Albania. During the 17th and 18th centuries, under Ottoman rule, a large number of Orthodox churches were built in this region of Albania. The construction of these churches was the result of many factors, including economic, religious, and political influences. The church of St. Michael, also known as the Church of the Archangels, is one of the earliest churches from this period. It reflects strength in architectural dimensions and a high level of iconographic and artistic quality in its interior wall paintings. The repertoire of wall paintings within this church is mostly subject to clear religious rules. However, its iconographic program includes specific themes and motifs that are worth studying, as they convey messages and important information directly related to the political context of the painting period. In summary, this study will explore the iconographic program of a significant area—the apse—of this early church of the Archangels. Through analysis, we aim to create an informative overview of the typical iconographic elements of the apse in Orthodox churches, as well as highlight innovations and specific features of the iconography in this important church.
