Abstract

Mobile applications are increasingly being used in many areas of life, where most systems, in addition to being created for desktops, are also adapted for mobile and other smartphones, because people spend most of their time on mobile devices, and it is easier for them to perform their daily tasks. Of particular importance during the development of modern mobile applications is the choice of API architecture, which directly affects performance, efficiency and easier surfing for clients. The two main approaches most used are REST API and GraphQL, which offer different ways of accessing data and interacting between clients and servers. Initially, through the paper, we are introduced to the way these two architectures work, describing the advantages and disadvantages of each of them, and then we continue with experimental analysis and description of some code sequences that we used in our experiment, both during the implementation of the REST API and GraphQL, on the client side and server side. The results of our testing and practical implementation also reinforce the positions of other research, that GraphQL is much better when it comes to executing more complex queries and time efficiency, while REST API is better when we have simpler and more stable requests. We concluded the paper by describing future trends in mobile APIs, with particular emphasis on hybrid architectures and integration with edge computing and serverless technologies.
