Abstract

Peripheral arterial calcification contributes to vascular stiffening and chronic limb-threatening ischemia. Identifying the anatomical distribution of vascular calcifications may improve patient evaluation and management. Aim To evaluate the prevalence and anatomical distribution of incidental vascular calcifications in patients undergoing radiographic imaging for symptoms unrelated to PAD. Methods A retrospective analysis was performed on 35 patients with radiologically confirmed vascular calcifications. Age, sex, and calcification sites were analyzed, while referring diagnoses were reviewed to exclude PAD-related symptoms. Results The mean age was 74.6 years (range 55–86), with 23 men and 12 women included. The aorta was the most common calcification site (13 cases), followed by the femoral artery (8 unilateral and 1 bilateral case). Phleboliths were identified in 3 patients, while distal arterial calcifications were less frequent. Conclusion Vascular calcifications were predominantly observed in large proximal arteries, especially the aorta and femoral arteries, consistent with age-related atherosclerotic and medial calcification patterns. Further studies are needed to correlate calcification patterns with chronic diseases and clinical outcomes.
