Abstract

The demonstrations of December 1968 in Tetovo were a continuation of the demonstrations held in October-November of that year in Peja, Prizren, Ferizaj, Pristina, Gjilan, Podujeva and several other centers in Kosovo, in which was required that the Albanian nation under the occupation of the SFRY, like the other nations of that federation, to have its own republic, which would include all Albanian lands under Yugoslav occupation, broken down into three republics and in an autonomous province. The initiators and leaders of those demonstrations were intellectuals and prominent Albanian activists such as: Mehmetriza Murtezani–Gega, Faik Mustafa, Dr. Harun Jakupi, Selajdin Hyseni, Arbër Xhaferi, Latif Ibrahimi, Sali Saliu, Ymer Ymeri, Mehmedali Hoxha and many others, some of whom received severe penalties from the then Yugoslav communist courts, respectively Macedonian courts. The aim of the paper is to capture the segment of discerning the personalities contributing to the realization of the Tetovo demonstrations in 1968, as well as the reflections that the act of demonstration had on the changes that would follow later in the Republic of Macedonia, starting in 1969, when official use of the Albanian language would mark remarkable progress, up to the constitutional advances that took place in 1974.
