Abstract
Development of pediatric medicines can be considered one of the most complicated and challenging spheres of pharmaceutical science, which is due to specific physiological, biochemical, and developmental properties of the children's body. Traditionally, medicinal products designed for use by children contain various synthetic excipients including sucrose, sorbitol, sodium benzoate, parabens, ethyl alcohol, and artificial dyes aimed at improving palatability, stability, and visual appearance of the preparation. Contemporary studies suggest, however, that such excipients can pose some threats to children's health including allergy, metabolic disturbances, neurotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, as well as potential impact on pediatric development in the long run. The purpose of this study is to critically analyze synthetic excipients used in pediatric pharmaceutical preparations and highlight safety concerns associated with their presence. At the same time, alternative approaches in the field of pediatric medicines, including using of natural alternatives and novel pharmaceutical technology solutions that would allow eliminating the use of synthetic excipients will also be explored. The methodology involves conducting a literature review and analyzing international documents on the subject matter.
