Abstract

Albanian people, as autochthonous in these lands, have experienced various historical periods, as well as the time of the great empires: Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empire. In the last empire, Albanians became an important factor in the Balkan Peninsula and beyond. For instance, their active participation in the political, social, religious life of Ottoman society, as well as the Dervish Cara Uprising, which was against reforms rather than against the empire itself (Matkovski, 2012) and many other important cases. In later times, Albanians also faced many cultural, religious, political, social and economic challenges. Some were pulling the rope to the west, some to the east, some to the Slavs and some to the Greeks. But the last word of all difficulties was the appearance of Slavic communist regime in all Albanian territories fragmented in several countries. There were two things that exhausted the Albanians both culturally and religiously. One was the Slavic and Hellenic line, according to which Albanians should be neither Albanian nor Muslim. The other was that it derives from Albanians themselves. According to the last one, Albanians by mistake have become Muslims, so they must abandon the Islamic religion, because according to them this is the main reason they face these problems in the Balkans. But if they agreed to convert, that is to say, convert into their ancestors’ religion, i.e. Catholicism, they would have always been protected by Europe. This opinion seems to me very naive and immature. For a person who thinks that the religion can be changed as if changing a shirt, it means that a person doesn’t has the sense what the role of religion for the person and society is, even if this was any other religion rather than Islam, such as Christianity, Judaism, etc.
