Abstract
Nowadays, Blockchain is a widely used notion in both, academia and industry. The unexpected growth of Bitcoin in the fourth quarter of 2017 prompted the increased interest on blockchain technology. Blockchain is a new type of database or ledger, as some of the researchers prefer to call it, which stores its records in blocks, where the same use cryptographic signature to link the blocks between themselves. The order of these blocks is linear and each block contains a timestamp and other information linking the block with the previous one. This paper presents an overview about the architecture, the technology and applications of blockchain. Additionally, this paper will try to represent and treat security challenges appearing during blockchain usage, scalability issues and challenges using blockchain technology, different algorithms used in different blockchains and the possibilites that this technology provides. Also, a brief comparison of different cryptocurrencies will be included, trying to provide an overview of the standards, algorithms and cryptographic models used in each of them. Finally, based on what other researchers concluded, this paper will also treat possibilities of usage that this interesting technology could provide in the future.
