Abstract

Post-communist literature is our gateway to a new perspective on a reality that has been lived or unlived. Authors of this period do not attempt to present or document the full reality of the communist era, this is the role of monographies and history; instead, they present fragments of that reality. In this paper, we will analyze how Fatos Kongoli presents the reality of communist-era in Albania in his post-communist works. The aim of this study is to examine how reality is fragmented in his works “The Lost” and “Life in a Matchbox.” We will analyze what he chooses and what he does not choose to depict in his works, which segment of reality predominates for him and why, and how this choice influences the creation of characters and the selection of themes. We will also examine how, through the magic of fiction, Kongoli presents a reality that has left trauma and caused significant psychological damage to the individual. Through Kongoli’s characters, we will understand the psychological violence experienced by individuals of that period and how sudden and rapid changes affected them.
