Abstract

This paper explores the role of post-war Albanian literature as an ethical and cultural medium for articulating memory and trauma. It aims to analyze how literary texts transform experiences of war, violence, displacement, and loss into forms of testimony that preserve collective memory and challenge dominant historical narratives. Method The study adopts a qualitative interpretative approach, examining poetic and narrative works by 48 Albanian authors published between 1999 and 2023. Drawing on trauma studies, memory theory, and the concept of postmemory, the analysis focuses on narrative strategies such as fragmentation, metaphorical and symbolic language, allegory, polyphony, and the representation of mnemonic spaces. Particular attention is given to the ways in which language mirrors traumatic experience and mediates between individual and collective memory. Results The analysis demonstrates that these literary texts function beyond aesthetic representation, operating as moral, historical, and political testimonies. Fragmented structures and disrupted temporality reflect the psychological impact of trauma, while figures such as children, women, refugees, prisoners, and the dead emerge as central carriers of memory and postmemory. Real places marked by violence—such as Prekaz, Gjakova, Bllaca, and refugee camps—are transformed into symbolic sites where personal and collective remembrance converge. Literature thus constructs alternative archives of memory that restore voice and dignity to silenced victims and expose the long-term consequences of war. Conclusions The paper concludes that post-war Albanian literature plays a crucial role in preserving traumatic memory and fostering ethical reflection. Through testimonial writing and symbolic language, literary creation becomes an act of resistance and survival, contributing to the formation of collective identity and historical consciousness while affirming the enduring human need for justice, remembrance, and dignity.
