Abstract
Euphemisms are an important linguistic feature. They are used to name those words that cannot be said by their real name. The area of Postriba besides wealth and diversity of words and idioms from various fields of social life is also rich in euphemisms. The aim of this study is to explore euphemisms that are used in the area of Postriba and analyses their semantic and structural features. In this work there are expounded and analyzed euphemisms that connected with taboo words like death, birth, medical conditions etc. Euphemism is a widespread language phenomenon and indispensable lubricant in language communication. It is an expression, which can show politeness, ease the tone and coordinate the personal relationships. They serve to enrich the vocabulary of a language. Euphemisms are used to replace designations for animals, sickness, birth, death, sex etc. If we classify them according to the semantic feature, we could draw a map of these euphemisms denoting: euphemisms about diseases, death, religious terms, Euphemisms related to the name of the man or the woman etc. As we all know, euphemisms are rich in people’s daily communication. It can help people form a positive communicative atmosphere to establish harmonious social relationships and eventually to achieve communicative goals. With the development of modern society, it has become an indispensable element in people’s interaction. The findings also reveal that taboos and euphemisms are deeply rooted in the Postribas’ cultural, religious norms and beliefs which affect their views and attitudes. Euphemisms have value even in our days, because through them we become acquainted with the history of different peoples, with antiquity, national peculiarities of the people, the language of religion etc.
