Abstract
The focus of this paper is the analysis of the adjective system in Albanian and Serbian, with particular attention to the category of definiteness in adjectives. The study applies a contrastive approach to examine the use of the definite adjective form and to identify the main similarities and differences in its application across the two linguistic systems. In Albanian, the category of definiteness is primarily associated with nouns; when applied to adjectives, it is realized through the phenomenon of nominalization, which occurs in contexts where the noun is already known or its repetition is unnecessary. In contrast, in Serbian, the indefinite form of adjectives, although gradually disappearing in contemporary usage, especially in oblique cases, is used when the adjective refers to a noun denoting something specific or previously mentioned. By means of illustrating the rules described in the grammars of these two languages, this paper seeks to determine the degree of equivalence between them. Contrastive analysis highlights the importance of a systematic clarification of the use of the definite form of adjectives in Serbian and Albanian.
