Abstract

Martin Camaj’s novel Rrathë is not merely a conventional narrative, but a mythopoetic space in which the language of orality and archaic symbolism are transformed into connecting bridges between past and present, between the visible and the invisible worlds. In this way, Camaj constructs a literary universe where time and space merge cyclically, offering the reader a multidimensional aesthetic and philosophical experience. Camaj’s character does not move toward the future simply to progress forward; instead, he turns back toward the origin, seeking the source of life itself—myths, rituals, and ancient symbols of Albanian culture. This return represents, at its core, an existential quest, a journey through the “circles” of life, where each step signifies a confrontation with time, nature, and the collective memory of the community. The use of mythopoetics as an analytical research method for literary phenomena with mythological elements enables us to observe how the author endows the work with meaningful and multilayered content. Mythological connections in the novel Rrathë do not appear merely as isolated mythic motifs, but primarily as structures of thought, as symbols and archetypes interwoven with the everyday lives of the characters and the world of the Albanian mountains, thus giving the novel a coherent and vivid depth. Research Methodology The research is grounded in the principles of mythopoetic analysis, a relatively recent literary approach that treats myths and archetypal structures as foundational pillars in the construction and interpretation of texts. The study of the mythopoetics of Rrathë, from a linguistic and literary perspective, is structured across three analytical levels. At the hypotextual level, the analysis examines mythological, folkloric, and archetypal sources that served as models and inspiration for the author. At the textual level, the novel itself is analyzed through its narrative structure, artistic imagery, use of archaic symbolism, and the language of orality. In addition to semiotic and narratological analysis, particular attention is paid to the ways in which mythopoetic elements are appropriated and transformed to generate new meanings. At the hypertextual level, the study evaluates how the text relates to broader cultural contexts, including intertextual relationships and its potential impact on the modern reader. This level also includes interpretations of the work in relation to other literary and cultural traditions. Originality and Contribution To date, Albanian literary and linguistic studies have not produced a systematic mythopoetic analysis of Martin Camaj’s works. Existing scholarship has primarily approached his oeuvre from historical, sociological, or existential perspectives, leaving aside a comprehensive examination of myth and symbolic structures within a literary and linguistic framework. This research addresses that gap, demonstrating that mythopoetics can reveal new meanings and hidden dimensions within the text. Its contribution is significant not only for Albanian literary studies, but also for a broader understanding of the universal relationship between human beings, tradition, and existential experience. Main Results From a literary perspective, the mythopoetic analysis reveals the presence of multiple narrative layers that intertwine in a cyclical and mythical manner, creating both a personal and a collective mythic map. From a linguistic perspective, mythopoetic symbolism and metaphor enrich the text, transforming language into a medium that transcends mere communication and acquires ritualistic and transcendent functions.
