Abstract

This study, part of my doctoral research on kinship terms in the Albanian language, examines the performativity of kinship terms in postmodern discourse, exploring how these terms function beyond their lexical meaning and traditional linguistic structure. In the postmodern approach, kinship terms are not reduced merely to markers of blood relations or social proximity, but assume the role of performative acts that construct, challenge, and deconstruct individual and collective identities. The analysis focuses on three main dimensions: (1) identity, where kinship terms are used to constitute or relativize social belonging; (2) irony, where these units become discursive tools to problematize grand narratives of authority, tradition, and patriarchy; and (3) blurring of boundaries, where kinship terms move from familial registers to public, artistic, and political contexts, highlighting the interplay between the sacred and the everyday, text and context. Drawing on anthropolinguistic perspectives and theories of performativity (Austin, 1962; Butler, 1997), as well as on the concept of the division between the sacred and the profane (Durkheim, 1912/1995), this study argues that kinship terms in postmodern discourse function as mechanisms for reinterpreting language, culture, and identity.
