Abstract

Albanian literary criticism has traditionally treated language as an instrument of narration, a system of signs through which the author transmits story and ideas, leaving in shadow its other, constitutive dimension: language as the matter from which narrative reality is generated. Ridvan Dibra's novel “Gjumi mbi borë” presents a particularly significant case for closing this interpretive gap: a work in which language does not serve as a transparent channel of transmission but operates as an organic substance that constructs the narrative from within, transforming the act of writing into an ontological act of creation. The study proposes a structured reading of the novel through five principal dimensions of linguistic functioning: language as a constitutive force of narrative reality; the construction of identities and power dynamics through differentiated linguistic registers; the articulation of an emotional topography through toponyms charged with symbolic value; rhythm and musicality as structural drivers of narrative tension; and the rendering of thought as a living linguistic process rather than a finished product. The methodology integrates three interwoven analytical pillars: micro textual analysis, macrostructural analysis, and semiotic interpretation, placing narratological, stylistic, and phenomenological perspectives in dialogue. The analysis reveals that the five dimensions are not independent aspects but different expressions of a single foundational poetic principle: language does not denote the world but constructs it. This principle materializes through several concrete mechanisms: language as a performative force that executes power dynamics within the communicative act; emotional topography created through the symbolic naming of space; isomorphism between linguistic form and the character's mental process; and narrative polyphony as the medium of a social reality conceived as a plurality of perspectives. Dibra's distinctive achievement lies in the balance between spontaneity and artistic control. His language preserves the naturalness of everyday speech while elevating it to the level of art through deliberate work with rhythm, intonation, and semantic structures. The original contribution of the study lies in proposing an interpretive model that shifts critical attention from what the novel says to how its language produces meaning and in arguing that “Gjumi mbi borë” marks an aesthetic shift of significance for contemporary Albanian prose as a whole: from a poetics of reflection toward a poetics of generation, in which language does not reproduce a pre-existing reality but creates it in the very act of expression. For Albanian literary criticism, the work emerges simultaneously as an achievement and as a methodological challenge: its full reading requires a conceptual apparatus that recognizes language as the protagonist of the work and reading as an act of co-creation.
