Abstract
This paper examines linguistics within the postmodern era as an intellectual and cultural context that transforms the understanding of language. Postmodernism, with its approach to metanarratives, directs attention to the local, contingent and dynamic aspects of communication. The aim of the paper is to show how linguistics loses its classical claim to absolute objectivity and is transformed into an interdisciplinary science that analyzes language in relation to culture, power and identity. Through an analysis of poststructuralist theories, contemporary discourse approaches, discourse linguistics, linguistic identity and relativism, the paper give its own position on the fact that postmodern linguistics opens up new possibilities for critical and empirical research on linguistic phenomena.
