Abstract
This study examines the decoding of literary text in the complete absence of punctuation marks, taking Ridvan Dibra’s novel The Free and the Imprisoned as a case study. Positioned at the intersection of literary analysis, psycholinguistics, and neurocognition, the research explores how meaning is constructed when the graphic signals that traditionally guide syntactic and semantic segmentation are missing. Central to the analysis is the reader as an active processor of information who reconstructs textual coherence through the activation of working memory, cognitive schemas, and syntactic competence. The theoretical framework is grounded in the Interactive Processing Model of reading, where bottom-up and top-down processes interact to compensate for the lack of punctuation, as well as in theories of discourse coherence and working memory. The analysis demonstrates that, in this type of discourse, the orienting functions of punctuation are replaced by stable syntactic structures, dense use of conjunctions, rhythmic repetitions, semantic oppositions, and the internal organization of narration. These elements create an “internal punctuation” that guides the reader in the gradual construction of meaning. In conclusion, the absence of punctuation is not presented as a structural deficiency but as an aesthetic and cognitive choice that shifts the focus from graphic segmentation to the linguistic and mental mechanisms of processing. The text thus becomes a space of interaction between author and reader, where meaning emerges as a dynamic and collaborative process of construction.
