Abstract
For Albanians living in the territories of the former Yugoslav federation, the early 20th century marked the beginning of a radical shift in the Balkan geopolitical map. This shift, which occurred openly, initially appeared to the world as an impossible notion; yet, it proved to be a reality where the Albanian people and their concerns remained the central focus. History teaches us that those who experience it are free to rewrite it whenever necessary, as history serves as a mentor across all times, circumstances, and places. It is within this precise dimension—demonstrating how diaries with historical, political, and social motifs are written across different eras—that Professor Rexhep Qosja offers his "candles." Reading them reveals that dedication to the Albanian nation, through the mind and the pen, is the duty of every intellectual, regardless of time or circumstance. Confronted with an era of "bitter hope," Prof. Qosja presented these diaries to illustrate the arduous path of an intellectual—a path paved with thorns during the years of the former communist system. He navigated this violent road to show that one should not be deterred by the adversities of the time, for albanians will emerge victorious if they unite in ideas and common effort.
