Abstract

The purpose of this paper is the study of verb tenses, based on Rexhep Ismajli’s treatments with accordance to the treatment in traditional grammar. Throughout this paper we treat time as a verbal category, present the verb tenses, their classification and function. Moreover, we will examine the criteria of verb tense classification, and present the subdivision according to their groups and structure afterwards. Theoretically, the paper is based on two studies conducted by Rexhep Ismajli: “Plurality of the text" (1980) and "Albanian language of the Assembly of Arbën 1706" (1985), in which he treats the verb system, more specifically presents the classification of verb tenses. Therefore, through this paper we will present the verb tenses beyond the traditional approach. The paper also covers the paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations of the verbal tenses. Altogether, the paper presents the synchrony and diachrony of verb tenses, based on the studies conducted by Rexhep Ismajli. This paper is conducted through qualitative method, given that the whole paper constitutes a theoretical summary of verb tenses according to Rexhep Ismajli. Thus, this paper presents the verb tenses as a grammatical and discourse category, in a plane beyond phrase.
